Measuring and Characterizing Disturbances in the Earth's Ionosphere

Speaker: Major Daniel Emmons (USAF)

Date: January 25, 2024 @ 4pm

Workman Center, Room 101

Abstract: The Earth's ionosphere plays a vital role in many modern technologies, especially with respect to High Frequency (NF) & satellite communications and global navigation (GPS). While 'calm' ionospheric conditions do not significantly impact satellite communications or GPS, ionospheric disturbances can degrade or halt operations entirely. In this talk, common methods for monitoring global ionospheric conditions will be introduced, with a focus on measuring and characterizing ionospheric disturbances. Further, a frequent mid-latitude ionospheric disturbance, sporadic-E, will be discussed in detail with an emphasis on using GPS radio occultation to monitor formation and extract characteristics.
